Instagram recently launched their new feature and an attempt to hammer another nail in the coffin for Snapchat with filters. You are able to use the filters by simply opening your camera and selecting the smiley face to the right of the shoot button.
Although very limited in their range at the moment, there is no doubt that the new filters section will be worrying Snapchat a fair bit. This looks like an attempt to appeal to the younger market by Instagram, a market that Snapchat so far have managed to maintain the attention of.
What does this mean for marketing?
As far as I am aware there is not yet any mention of Instagram allowing custom filters to be created, so the marketing potential is not quite that of Snapchat yet. However, given Instagram’s trend of ‘subtly’ copying Snapchat features I don’t imagine this is going to be too far behind the latest announcement. In the short term however this is likely to mean a shift in attention from Snapchat over to Instagram and may even mean the migration of key influencers from one platform to the other…this means more opportunity for marketers on Instagram.
